FAQs
An alcohol home detox is an alternative to an alcohol residential rehab. It is a managed detoxification at your home or another safe environment, to gradually remove yourself from alcohol dependence safely. It is usually undertaken using sedatives and vitamins to alleviate dangerous alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
Alcohol detox is required when people find it difficult to stop drinking or experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop drinking alcohol.
Withdrawal symptoms can mild, moderate, or severe.
Common alcohol withdrawal symptoms include:
• Nausea or vomiting
• Shaky hands
• Sweats
• Anxiety
• Agitation
• Tactile disturbances
• Auditory hallucinations
• Visual hallucinations
• Headache
• Disorientation
Not everyone can or is willing to spend the time and money going into expensive residential rehab for a period. Work, family, and other life commitments make residential rehab not the best option. Therefore, a home detox becomes the solution and cost effective when you can have a professional medical detox in the comfort of your own home with no disruption to normal life.
A home detox can usually be arranged to start within 48hrs or at a day and time that suits the client.
What Is Involved in An Alcohol Home Detox – How Does It Work?
We will arrange for a specialist substance misuse prescriber to carry out a full consultation.
• prescribing of sedatives – the most used drugs for alcohol withdrawal are Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) and, less often, Oxazepam and vitamins
• dietary advice and direction
• prescribing of alcohol relapse prevention medication to reduce cravings Acampsaye (Campral)
Also, advice psychosocial interventions for relapse prevention and direction on relevant referral as required to tackle triggers in to maintain long term abstinence.
A home alcohol detox usually lasts around 7 to 12 days depending on the level of alcohol consumption and medication required to safely withdraw from alcohol.
The detox is one component of recovery journey. Once the detox is complete, clients should embark on the psychosocial element part of the treatment to remain abstinent. This component is key to help you cope with the reasons for drinking excessively as well as providing tools and strategies to stay abstinent.
